Concept

The 4th Journées d'actualité de la recherche archéologique au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg (JALUX) are organized as part of the scientific program of the Centre Régional de Recherche Archéologique du Titelberg, under the aegis of INRA.


The JALUX aim to promote archaeological research in Luxembourg by presenting the results of archaeological research carried out in Luxembourg or the Greater Region. The results of preventive and programmed excavations, as well as academic research, are presented in the form of lectures followed by a brief discussion.

The JALUX are an opportunity for all those involved in research (private archaeological operators, state archaeologists, associations, researchers from different backgrounds, etc.) to share their experiences. Access to the Journées d'actualité is open and free of charge to anyone involved in researching and promoting the archaeological heritage of the Greater Region.

Historical background

The concept of the first Journées d'actualité de la recherche archéologique au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg (JALUX) was set up, with the support of the management of the INRA (former CNRA), notably as a result of the discussions between Mei Duong and Laurent Brou on the importance of communication and scientific dissemination. These discussions were prompted by the rapidly increasing number of preventive archaeological operations and the arrival of new archaeologists in Luxembourg. The initial aims of the conference were to facilitate the exchange of experience and knowledge between archaeologists working in private accredited structures, and to establish the foundations of an archaeological community in Luxembourg.

While Luxembourg's preventive archaeology sector is subject to the laws of competition, the INRA encourages archaeological operators to promote scientific research as part of the missions entrusted to them. For the INRA, it's vital that there should be no distinction between state and private sector researchers - they all belong to the same scientific community.

On the 13th of February 2020, the 1st Annual Archaeological Research Day (JALUX) was held at the Geological Department of the State in Bertrange, bringing together several dozens archaeologists from the CNRA and private archaeological firms.

After three years of “lethargy” due to COVID restrictions, a 2nd JALUX was held in 2023 at Fond-de-Gras. The main objective was to relaunch the event, make it sustainable and to reflect on its future organisation.

One year later, the event has grown in scope, taking place over two days with contributions from researchers working in Luxembourg, as well as specialists from the Greater Region, university researchers and members of associations. The 3rd JALUX took place in the amphitheatre of the Institut de Formation Sectoriel du Bâtiment in Bettembourg (IFSB). We would like to thank the IFSB management and staff, in particular Patrick Nemry, Michel Lemineur, Vitor Figueira and Célia Bassor, for their help and contribution to the success of the 3rd JALUX.

These 3rd JALUX marked a turning point, particularly in terms of the event's organisation and format, and the INRA hopes to have satisfied all participants - contributors and listeners alike. In view of the interest and success encountered, INRA sincerely hopes that the JALUX adventure will continue...
