Our missions

  1. The research, protection, conservation and promotion of our national archaeological heritage ; 
  2. to organise and promote all forms of scientific research in archaeology ; 
  3. to process applications in the field of preventive archaeology and applications for archaeological evaluation submitted under the law on cultural heritage of 25 February 2022 ; 
  4. to advise the Minister of Culture in the execution of articles 5 and 6 of the law on cultural heritage of 25 February 2022; 
  5. to undertake archaeological research, surveys and excavations; 
  6. to ensure the scientific and technical supervision of approved private and public organisations carrying out archaeological excavations or research; 
  7. to ensure the protection, preservation and promotion of pre-medieval archaeological sites, and advise the National Institute for Architectural Heritage (Institut national pour le patrimoine architectural, INPA) on the maintenance and valorisation of medieval and modern archaeological sites; 
  8. to assess applications submitted to the Minister of Culture for authorisation for preventive archaeological and scientific investigations; 
  9. to establish an inventory of archaeological heritage, and manage and update the cartographic inventory of archaeological heritage; 
  10. to ensure post-excavation research, management and conservation of archaeological material resulting from all archaeological investigations;
  11. to support and advise voluntary and associative initiatives aimed at promoting and protecting archaeological heritage; 
  12. to manage scientific, educational and technical facilities relating to the archaeological heritage, and collaborate in the creation and management of regional and local infrastructures concerning archaeological heritage;
  13. to cooperate with the National Museum of Archaeology, History and Art (Musée national d’archéologie, d’histoire et d’art, MNAHA), particularly in regard of the archaeological collections; 
  14. to cooperate with the National Institute for Architectural Heritage (Institut national pour le patrimoine architectural, INPA), and the Commission for Cultural Heritage (Commission pour le patrimoine culturel), as well as with the Commission for the Circulation of Cultural Goods (Commission de circulation des biens culturels), insofar as their activities concern archaeological heritage; 
  15. to cooperate with the National Museum of Natural History (Musée national d’histoire naturelle, MNHN) in safeguarding and promoting the archaeological heritage in its care, and with all other entities responsible for national archaeology.
